What After CAT?

Jayita Ekka updated on : 12 Dec, 2020 23

CAT is one of those examinations where being above average is not really going to get you anywhere. You have to be great, and not just good, if you want to crack the CAT out of shape. Nevertheless, like wise men say,  'There are plenty of fish in the sea and Management entrances are no exception to this rule.'

So let's look closely at some of the options that you may consider in case the "CAT" has ditched you this time round.

1. Encore - Try again!

You could introspect on what went wrong and then analyze your weak areas. There are few places in life where you can learn from your mistakes and come back better prepared for the same battle again. So utilize the year ahead in preparing better, taking more Mock Tests, consuming up newspapers for breakfast lunch and dinner. And then perhaps in the following attempt CAT will be more favorable to your advances

2. There are approx. 2000 AICTE approved B-Schools in India!

Yes you read it right! There are about 2K B schools in India approved by AICTE, and many more who are running without the AICTE tag (not all of these are necessarily 'bad'). Check out schools that are in line with your career aspirations or educational aspirations. Read more about them, their infrastructure, their alumni, their faculty and see what schools you can still consider applying to. Sure they may not have been your ideal first choice, but then you just might be surprised at the number of good schools that have come up that you've not considered in your shortlist yet.

3. Look beyond borders

Travelling abroad for higher education has seen a huge increase in demand. An international MBA has great advantages, but it also requires a lot of diligent research and efforts. This could play out well in case you have a good deal of work experience already. Look for good universities abroad that may suit your profile and aspirations and start applying. Do remember though that an international MBA burns quite a hole in the pocket, so be prepared for that before you start applying.

4. Get a Job!

Spending time to get a job that will add up to your experience is one of the best ways to spend the time you have at hand. In case you are certain about doing an MBA from India and want to re-attempt CAT and other exams, then spend your time working (even if as an intern) in a company and profile that suits your career goals. In case you wish to pursue an MBA in HR, then try to see if you can get an HR internship or trainee level jobs. These internships may pay low, but in case you are sure about your specilization then they will pay out better dividends in the long run. The other option could be to settle for any job that keeps fuelling your expenses and save up some stash for your MBA fees. Work experience will help you get an idea about cultural differences at work, handling pressure and organizational behaviour.

And if you want to know what percentile you can get in CAT 2020 , then use CAT percentile and IIM call predictor tool.
