Journalism

If capturing and reporting news stories give you a high, then a career in journalism is something you should definitely consider! A career in this field requires you to be a confident person, who can write as well as communicate well. Good presentation skills and the ability to deliver information accurately and concisely are qualities of a good journalist. Other than that, the field of journalism and mass communication requires people with an inquisitive bent of mind, ability to differentiate fact from fiction, tact, intelligence, awareness and capability to handle unexpected circumstances.

Journalism can be broadly divided into Print and Electronic. While print media consists of newspapers, journals, magazines, digests and news agencies, electronic media includes television, radio and the internet. The career options vary in each of these fields.

Writing & Editing

From choosing topics and conducting research to assembling the material to write and editing the content to be printed is what the job of a writer and copy editor entails. Editing and rewriting to improve the language and giving appropriate and attractive headlines to articles are some of the functions involved in this area. Imagination, understanding and a nose for news are essential requirements for this job.

Reporting

As a reporter, your job will involve recognizing news stories, covering them and reporting with speed, clarity and accuracy. Under this profile, you can work for a newspaper, magazine, news agency, radio or television channel. Being a reporter also means you should be able to get the news first and as fast as possible to gain maximum mileage for your organization.

Anchoring

Being a presenter on a TV channel or a radio show means you should have good communication skills as well as command over speech, diction and language. Other than this, an anchor/presenter should have good general knowledge and the ability to be articulate and compose in stressful conditions. Control over words and a good quality of expression are vital for this job.
