Delhi University’s (DU) FYUP: Will it be a fair deal for students?

Are you a Delhi University aspirant wanting to major in Chemistry with Commerce as a minor subject, Biomedical Science with Economics or Political Science with Arabic? With many DU colleges not offering the entire spectrum of courses across the Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences and Commerce, it is still unclear as to how much choice learners will actually have in the new four-year undergraduate programme and how flexible it will be-specifically, which discipline 2 (DC) and applied courses will be an offer at the different colleges. Acharya Narendra Dev College (ANDC), Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) and Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR), for example, primarily offer Science, Commerce or Arts courses (with an exception or two), respectively.

The number of majors and minors, too, varies drastically from one college to another. While LSR is offering 13 DC 1 courses, SRCC has only two. Which DC2 can one take? At LSR, the DC 2 courses will be finalised in the next semester. “It will depend on the kind of courses students want and what will benefit them. It will also depend on the workload of the faculty, college infrastructure and other logistical issues.

We will look into the interest of the majority of students and also seek opinions from the various departments before taking the final decision on the DC 2 and applied courses (AC),” says Kanika Khandelwal, spokesperson, LSR. SRCC and ANDC authorities, too, say that they will offer DC 2 courses in the basis of demand, faculty, etc. who will teach the new courses? How will such colleges teach foundation courses they have not offered so far? While LSR will have its own faculty for teaching most of the foundation courses, it is likely to rope in guest faculty for the course on Science and Life.

“We may get teachers from the elementary education department for this course. Since the other courses are truly interdisciplinary, only experienced teachers from our college will take on the other foundation courses. It’s a unique and new experience coming our way,” says Khandelwal. SRCC hopes for the applied and foundation courses. “We may also follow the cluster system for teaching some of the courses such as languages. We are likely to get more teacher for Science and Life, and Indian Histroy and Culture,” says PC Jain, principal, SRCC.

ANDC’s existing faculty is going to handle all the foundation courses other than Language, Literature and creativity 1 to be taught in the first year. Since the second year papers are primarily Humanities based, the college plans to employ visiting faculty for these.

The dean of colleges has issued a letter last week to the colleges which says that “it is imperative on the part of the colleges/institutions to review the requirements of teachers in each discipline/subject on priority basis so as to ensure that the process of recruitment of teachers is initiated prior to commencement of the new academic session 2013-14.”
