Delhi University's four-year course to have flavours of all subjects

Nidhi Bahl updated on : 03 Mar, 2014 0

You may not have studied probability or political science after Class 10 but the Delhi University will make sure that you get a flavour of each of these in the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP). The syllabi of the basic courses have been changed, and foundation courses and applied courses have been added.

The varsity has revamped courses this year for the controversial system. The foundation courses, too, have generated a lot of attention.

Foundation Courses

Aimed at making students aware about the unique problems and challenges that India faces, DU has introduced 11 compulsory foundation courses. These include courses in science and mathematical ability as well and will start in the first semester itself. We take a look at six of these courses. All students, irrespective of the stream they come from, will have to study all 11 courses over the first two years.

Hindi — language, literature and creativity

The course intends to use literature on social problems to raise awareness among students about “national challenges” such as economic development, energy and gender.

Science and Life

The course aims at teaching students basic scientific concepts and theories such as origin and evolution of life, water and energy, industry and technology in daily life and nutrition.

Mathematical ability

The course deals with data and building comfort in dealing with numbers.
The course includes data analysis, logic, prime numbers and their properties and risk prediction. The course stays away from lengthy equations and theorems and focuses, instead, on making students more comfortable in data analysis and interpretation.

Indian history and culture

The course revolves around themes of environment, culture and traditional practices, urbanisation, social inequality, heritage, and culture. No one from the department of history was consulted while making the syllabus, it has been alleged.

Business entrepreneurship and management

The course aims to train students in what seem to be the buzzwords these days: innovation and entrepreneurship. The course will be divided into four subheads - entrepreneurship, business, market and society and management.

Environment and public health

The course will discuss the scope of and perspectives on public health in the country and aims to establish awareness of health hazards posed by the environment. It will also discuss the impact of government policies and urbanisation on the environment.

Discipline II

After completing one year at the university, students will have to choose a minor subject to study. A student is also free to choose two minor subjects in the four years of the honours programme.

Applied Courses

These are courses that will help students understand the practical applications of the subjects that they choose. A student is free to choose any applied course that she chooses. A student will study a total of four subject specific applied courses and one language applied course.

This is also for the first time that extra-curricular activities and sports activities are being given specific places in the time table.
