DU Admissions 2013: Students in a fix over Maths as an eligibility for Commerce courses

Delhi University's decision to allow commerce students who did not study mathematics to pursue courses that fall under this stream may have come as a ray of hope to many, but the colleges seem to have ignored the notification.

According to the additional eligibility criteria that have been uploaded on the university's website, colleges such as Lady Shri Ram, SGTB Khalsa and Kirori Mal are still demanding that students must have studied mathematics in Class 12 and should have scored a minimum percentage in it to be eligible for admission in their colleges.

Officials at Lady Shri Ram College said they had not received any written communication from the university in this regard. "Also, we believe that knowledge of mathematics is important for a student who wishes to study commerce and that is why we have had maths as a requirement for such courses for so long," said a teacher at the college.

University officials, however, said the communication has been sent to the colleges. The notification was also uploaded on the university website on 28th May 2013.

But it is not just eligibility conditions where the colleges fail. Colleges such as Kirori Mal and SGTB Khalsa have mentioned the eligibility conditions for courses such as B.Com (programme) and BA (programme) despite the fact that these courses have already been discontinued.

The admission brochure the university has uploaded is the only document that has information about the additional eligibility criteria. If misleading information in carried on this portal, the students will end up a confused lot.

The university authorities have blamed the colleges for sending it wrong information and have said it will make sure that the incorrect information is removed.

B.Com used to be the most popular course in the university till last year. According to figures provided by some colleges, close to 40% of the students would fill commerce as a choice in their forms.
