JEE (Main) Paper 2 is especially for those candidates who want to apply for B Arch or B Planning courses. The paper consists of three parts – Mathematics, Aptitude and Drawing. The Mathematics part is similar to Paper 1, therefore one need not do any extra preparation for this part of the paper.
It is the part 2 of the paper which is a bit tricky and can be new to the students. Some of the questions pertain to counting the number of surfaces or triangles from a given 2D or 3D structure diagram. Counting them correctly requires keen observation with patience.
Similarly, in some questions a diagram of a 3D structure is given and you are asked to guess the top view or front view of the structure. Practising projection drawing may help you get a clear idea as to how to approach these questions. The questions related to recognising a pattern in a series of diagrams and recognising the ‘next in the series’ are available in any standard aptitude booklet. Adequate practice of such questions helps you develop an instinct for recognising the pattern quickly. You should also get some awareness about famous architects and some of their best creations. A basic knowledge of building material and their properties may also help.
The last part of the paper is drawing. You will need to draw a picture out of the two to three optional subjects that will be mentioned in the paper. You can use coloured pencils or crayons to make it more colourful and attractive. However, in the process of making it attractive, you should not forget to complete the basics mentioned in the question. For example, if you are supposed to draw ‘a balloon seller in front of a park,’ then both the ‘balloon seller’ and the ‘park’ need to be drawn and not just the colourful balloons. A brief course in perspective drawing can be helpful in this.
While approaching the paper, the portion of Mathematics is the toughest one. So the suggestion is to attempt this part of the paper in the end, if maths is not your strongest area. The candidate should first try to maximise his score in the aptitude and the drawing part. While attempting the maths part, try to spend some time in locating the easiest questions and attempt them only in the balance time.
