Most of us are clueless about what to do after school, what course to pursue for graduation/ post-graduation and what career to take up. We give you 3 quick tips that will help you narrow down your choices and decide on your dream career.
The 3 basic tips that will help you decide on how to pick the right career:
1. Do what you love: Look for a career that involves doing something you love. As kids we have learnt that work and fun are two different concepts that don’t mix. Remember “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”?
The very idea of mixing work and play or loving what you do has been foreign to us. After all, are you not supposed to dread going to office? But to succeed in your career and to find THE career that’s right for you, it is important to know what you would love to do. And when you love doing what you do, it no longer feels like work! And that is the recipe to excel in your career!
2. Think backward: You have absolutely NO idea why you pursued a B.Sc in Physics, when all you wanted to do was write a book. Now unless that book was a thesis on How To Split an Electron, you really need not have groaned your way through 3 years of sheer torture attending Physics lectures. Sounds familiar?
To avoid ending up in a fix like this, start thinking backward if you are confused about what course to pursue after school. I’m going to ask something that 90% of the interviewers will be asking you when you start applying for jobs: Where do you see yourselves 5/10/15 years from now? If you can conjure up an image of yourself doing something/anything, half your problem is solved.
So if you have an affinity for fine arts and illustration and are fascinated by jewellery, you would have imagined yourself to be a jewellery designer, not an accountant. Once you are clear about your career goal, start working towards it. Don’t waste time studying for CA, instead opt for a Bachelors in Design from NIFT or NID, then intern at a jewellery house or a top brand.
When you know where your destination lies, the roads become well-defined and clear. You won’t run around in circles anymore.
3. Get your definition of “success” right: None of us want to tread down a career path that won’t lead us to success. But we need to backtrack here and get our definition of the term “success” right. Do not confuse success with earning pots of money. To some of us, a fat paycheck might indeed be the end of the road. But you might not like your work profile and may even end up detesting it after a while.
Your primary concern while selecting a job, as mentioned earlier, should be your love and passion for that particular field of work. You might not start off with a lot of money, but if you enjoy what you do, you are bound to be successful at it.
So go ahead, put on your introspection cap and decide what your dream career should be!
