How to Prepare for NMAT 2013

Nishatha Abraham updated on : 12 May, 2020 8

NMAT is the entrance test for admission to various MBA programmes at the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) Mumbai. As you would already know, NMAT 2013 is being held in a window period of almost one and a half month from 11th October to 19th December 2012 with a choice of two retakes for admission to various courses of NMIMS for the academic year 2013-14.

Before trying to figure out how to crack NMAT, it is crucial to understand the pattern of the exam and know the areas in which your skills will be tested.

NMAT is a computer-based, 2 hour, objective-type multiple-choice test. (There will be no descriptive type questions).

It consists of the following sections:

Sr.No

Section

No. of Questions

Time in Minutes

1

Language Skills

32

22

2

Quantitative Skills

48

60

3

Logical Reasoning

40

38

Total

120

120

It is important to perform well as compared to other candidates in each of these 3 sections since the score of each section & the overall score will be used to shortlist you for the next stage of the selection process. There is NO negative marking in NMAT.

Now comes the important part: How to crack this exam?

First we’ll tell you the good part: NMAT is an easy exam if you compare it with entrance exams like CAT, XAT etc. But the catch in this exam is your speed coupled with accuracy.

Some tips for you:

  • It’s all about SPEED!
Unlike an upper limit when you’re on the road, there is no limit to your speed here. The faster you can attempt questions, the better. Since there is no negative marking in NMAT 2012, they want you to attempt as many questions as you can, if not all.
  • ACCURACY matters too!
What is the point of attempting the maximum number of questions if most of them turn out to be wrong? Try to strike a balance between speed & accuracy. Just because there is no negative marking, don’t go marking random answers!
  • There’s nothing like PRACTICE!
“Practice makes a man perfect”, so goes the clichéd saying. But it’s clichéd because it’s true! And nothing can prepare you better for NMAT 2012 than practicing as many sample tests as possible! It would be ideal if you join a test series of renowned coaching centres like IMS, Career Launcher, TIME etc. or practice free online mock tests.
  • Get your BASICS clear!
Before you move on to practicing questions from big, fat book, it’s important to get your basics (for quantitative especially) cleared. For this, you have to go back to your humble NCERT textbooks. After you’re through with that, you can graduate to books from Pearson for both Quantitative and Verbal, R.S Aggarwal for Verbal as well as Logical Reasoning, Wren & Martin for your English.
  • Get comfortable with a COMPUTER!
NMAT went from paper format to a computer based test from the year 2010. So make sure that your mock tests are always taken on a computer.  Students tend to get jittery and nervous in an examination hall and things can get worse if you are not comfortable taking an exam using a computer and a mouse.

Keep in mind that NMAT is quite different from CAT, XAT or other MBA entrance exams. The main aim should be to clear the cut off in all the 3 sections. The topics to be covered and the sections that are tested in NMAT remain more or less similar to CAT and other management entrance exams. Just make sure that you practice as many sample papers/ mock tests under the simulated conditions as possible.
