The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) has now joined the protest with IIT alumni against the introduction of the new IIT JEE exam format 2013 as decided by the HRD Ministry lead by Kapil Sibal and IIT Council. The new format of the Common Entrance Test IIT JEE proposed that 2013 onwards, a two step IIT JEE entrance exam will be conducted - JEE Main and JEE Advanced. IIT Kanpur called the new IIT JEE admission format a ‘breach of trust’ and maintained that the new system should not be implemented before 2014. They contended that both the process and the content of the new examination IIT JEE 2013 was not clear as yet and would not be for sometime soon because work on the details has not been started as yet.
According to the IIT Kanpur Federation, the format announced is a "piecemeal patch-work" with "serious academic and organisational lacunae" in each of the components of the test. "It has the potential of becoming a national disaster if not opposed by all stakeholders at this stage."
Clearing the air, the federation said that while a large number of admission tests are certainly undesirable, a single test on the other hand would be more harmful as it is likely to lead to much more stress, and it can become unfair to a large number of students because of contingent uncertainties. The IIT-Kanpur faculty federation felt using school board marks through percentile based normalisation as proposed under the new format is untested, and based on questionable hypothesis. Adding on to this, the federation added that the students are victims to a bad education system and said attributing failure of the schooling system to engineering admission tests is to abrogate the responsibility of improving it.
"The new format is a retrograde step and reverses the continuous churning within the IIT system to improve its admission process academically. The decision to effect the changes, that too from 2013, against all academic advice, reeks of executive brinkmanship with the sole aim of hogging the limelight for reforms credit," the federation said.
The IIT Federation also attacked the government saying, "the decision to effect the changes, that too from 2013, against all academic advice, reeks of executive brinkmanship with the sole aim of hogging the limelight for reforms credit," .The IIT Alumni Association decided to file public interest litigations in various courts so that they could get a stay order by June 6, because that is when the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) was supposed to meet. The fate of the new exam format of IIT JEE 2013 is yet to take shape in the current scheme of events.
