Getting a job after your graduation depends on, mainly if not totally, your CPI or CGPA, whatsoever you may call it and ask any IIT student how to get a good CPI and all your presumptions about IIT and IITians will flush down the gutter and all that will remain is the bitter truth and a question to ponder upon, "What do we know? What have we learnt?" The problem lies in the fact that students now a days are not looking for something to invent, build or innovate, which they are definitely capable of, given the brilliant brains and excellent facilities in an Indian Institute of Technology, but for a well-paying company to cater to their basic needs. I don't expect every IITian to be a "Rancho" because I totally understand the difference between reel life and real life but what I expect from a student of caliber like that of an IITian is not to waste that talent by sitting in a 8x10 closet staring at a computer screen.
All the Indian Institutes of Technology receive crores of rupees as funds from the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, that are spent directly or indirectly on the students of these institutions.
Keeping myself limited to IIT Kanpur, on an average, the institute spends on every individual student something over 10 times the amount of fees paid by him/her which includes the tuition, innumerable sports and other facilities, accommodation, messing, etc. Citizens of this country are being highly taxed and a significant fraction is being used in improving the facilities in IITs. But as a matter of fact students are not interested in pursuing research which was the sole purpose of introducing and bringing IITs into existence by Late Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India. Keeping ourselves limited to IIT Kanpur where once classes used to take place in the canteen building of Harcourt Butler Technological Institute, Kanpur and now in the vast campus of over 1000 acres, the spirit and enthusiasm for research has always been on a downfall.
