The first paper of the JEE (Main) gives equal weightage to class 11 and class 12 level physics, chemistry and mathematics. Instead of definitions, the emphasis will be more on application of concepts. Students should not neglect the class 11 syllabus as a lot of questions in paper 1 are based on this. Taking at least two mock tests in the last few days in actual test conditions will help you draw a clearer picture as to where you lack and what your strengths are.

However, it’s also necessary to analyse the results of these mock tests and plan the last few days of preparation accordingly because, at times, students get low scores not just due to lack of knowledge, but also because of wrong answers, poor time management or bad selection of questions.
Students are advised not to be selective while studying physics, chemistry and mathematics because there are more questions where there is intermingling of concepts from various topics.
Last year, it was found that in physics, 40% questions were easy, 52% moderate and 8% difficult. More weightage was given to chapters such as mechanics and electromagnetism, optics, modern physics and current electricity.
In chemistry, 40% questions were easy, 50% moderate and 10% difficult. More questions were asked from physical chemistry than inorganic and organic chemistry.
Mathematics had 32% ‘easy’ questions, 58% moderate and 10% difficult questions. More weightage was given to algebra, coordinate geometry and calculus rather than vector and three-dimensional geometry and trigonometry.
Candidates must remember to attempt theoretical questions first and then answer questions which require calculations. It is advisable to avoid numerical questions in the first 10 or 15 minutes of the exam.
Though the syllabus is similar to what you learn in school, what makes paper 1 of JEE (Main) different is that it is purely in the multiple choice question format. Besides, there is negative marking for wrong answers. So choose your questions prudently.
