Indian Engineering Services (IES/ES) constitute engineers that work under the government of India to manage all public engineering activities such as railways, public works, power telecommunications and so on and public sector enterprises.
Any candidate with a degree in engineering in any specialisation is eligible to take this competitive exam conducted by the UPSC. The selection process constitutes of a written examination followed by an interview for personality test.
The written test covers four engineering specialisations — civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and electronics and telecommunication engineering.
These specialisations are tested in the exam as they relate to the kind of work officers of the IES will be involved in, which include building and construction, electrical, power and telecommunication activities.
The written examination will comprise two sections: section 1 - objective types questions and section 2 - conventional (essay) type questions papers. Both sections cover the entire syllabus of the relevant engineering subject.
There is also a personality test where the interview panel will assess your capacity for leadership, initiative and intellectual curiosity, social qualities like integrity, and powers of practical application. This exam leads to a career with the Indian Engineering Services, considered equivalent to the other civil services.
