LSAT (Law School Admission Test) India 2013: Exam Pattern

The total duration of the test “LSAT- India” is 2 hours and 20 minutes without any break.

The LSAT—India 2013 is a paper-and-pencil test with four sections. Two of the sections contain logical reasoning questions; one section contains analytical reasoning questions; and one section contains reading comprehension questions.

The amount of time allotted for each section is 35 minutes. All questions are in a multiple-choice format, some with four answer choices and others with five. Answers are collected on a scannable answer sheet.

There is no deduction for incorrect answers and all questions count equally. In other words, there is no penalty for guessing. LSAT – India scores are reported in percentiles.

There will be two versions of the LSAT—India administered on 19th May, 2013:

  • one for the 5-year integrated B.A. LL.B. (or equivalent) programme applicants
  • and another for the 3-year LL.B. applicants/LL.M. applicants

Preparation Tips for LSAT-India 2013

LSAT-India has 4 sections consisting of 3 types of questions:

1. Reading Comprehension questions

2. Analytical Reasoning questions

3. Logical Reasoning questions

Here’s how you can prepare for each type of these questions for LSAT-India 2013:

1. Reading Comprehension Questions: The Reading Comprehension section of the LSAT—India contains 4 sets of reading questions, each set consisting of a selection of reading material followed by 5-8 questions. The reading selection in three of the four sets consists of a single reading passage; the other set generally contains two related shorter passages. Sets with two passages are a variant of Reading Comprehension called “Comparative Reading”. Reading selections for reading comprehension questions are drawn from subjects such as the humanities, the social sciences, the biological and physical sciences, and issues related to the law.

How can you tackle such reading comprehension questions?

In preparing for the test, you should experiment with different strategies and decide which work most effectively for you. These include:

  • reading the selection very closely and then answering the questions;
  • reading the questions first, reading the selection closely, and then returning to the questions; or
  • skimming the selection and questions very quickly, then rereading the selection closely and answering the questions.
  • Always read all the answer choices before selecting the best answer. The best answer choice is the one that most accurately and completely answers the question being posed.
  • Respond to the specific question being asked. Do not pick an answer choice simply because it is a true statement.
  • Remember that questions are to be answered exclusively on the basis of the information provided in the selection. There is no particular knowledge that you are expected to bring to the test, and you should not make inferences based on any prior knowledge of a subject that you may have.

2. Analytical Reasoning Questions: In these kind of questions, you are asked to make deductions from a set of statements, rules or conditions that describe relationships among entities such as persons, places, things or events. They simulate the kinds of detailed analyses of relationships that a law student must perform in solving legal problems.

How can you tackle such Analytical Reasoning questions?

  • No formal training in logic is required to answer these questions correctly. Analytical reasoning questions are intended to be answered using knowledge, skills and reasoning ability generally expected of college students.
  • Some people may prefer to answer first those questions about a passage that seem less difficult and then those that seem more difficult. In general, it is best not to start another passage before finishing one begun earlier because much time can be lost in returning to a passage and re-establishing familiarity with its relationships. Do not assume that because the conditions for a set of questions look long or complicated, the questions based on those conditions will necessarily be especially difficult and graduates.
  • In reading the conditions, do not introduce unwarranted assumptions.
  • Each question should be considered separately from the other questions in its set; no information, except what is given in the original conditions, should be carried over from one question to another.
  • Many people find it useful to underline key points in the passage and in each question. In addition, it may prove very helpful to draw a diagram to assist you in finding the solution to the problem.

3. Logical Reasoning Questions: In these questions, the arguments are contained in short passages taken from a variety of sources, including letters to the editor, speeches, advertisements, newspaper articles and editorials, informal discussions and conversations, as well as articles in the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences. Each logical reasoning question requires you to read and comprehend a short passage, then answer one or two questions about it.

How can you tackle such Logical Reasoning questions?

  • Read each question carefully. Make sure that you understand the meaning of each part of the question. Make sure that you understand the meaning of each answer choice and the ways in which it may or may not relate to the question posed.
  • Do not pick a response simply because it is a true statement. Although true, it may not answer the question posed.
  • Answer each question on the basis of the information that is given, even if you do not agree with it. Work within the context provided by the passage. The questions do not involve any tricks or hidden meanings.
