Providing some relief to aspirants, the Punjab government has decided to fill the Master of Business Administration (MBA) seats on the basis of performance in the Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) conducted by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), scrapping the state-level Management Entrance Test (MET).
The MET was also mandatory to get seats for the Master of Computer Application (MCA), seats of which will now be filled on the basis of the performance in the qualifying degree exam, said Punjab Technical University (PTU) dean, admissions, Buta Singh.
PTU vice-chancellor Rajneesh Arora said the state government had recently accepted the proposal to scrap the MET, as the number of students taking the test had reduced to 8,000 last year, much less that the 14,000-plus MBA seats filled through university counselling.
"The management quota seats are filled separately by colleges. Keeping in view the less number of students opting for the test even in the open category, the university had recommended abolishing the state-level test," Arora said.
"Besides, we wanted to unburden students and save their money too. Admission will now be held through online counselling on the basis of CMAT," Arora added.
He noted that an early decision to abolish the state-level test - the last date for registration for the CMAT is January 2 - would help students prepare for a single admission exam and would also help universities concentrate more on academic activities.
"The AICTE's decision to hold the CMAT twice a year has also emerged as an advantage for students. Deliberations with affiliated colleges are on to start MBA admissions twice a year, but we are yet to finalise anything as the state government will take a final decision," Arora further informed.
