It’s been a while we discussed everything about National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in detail. After much of the hullabaloo, a crucial development has taken place in the field as the Honourable President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, has signed an ordinance put forth by the Health Ministry of India. This ordinance will defer the implementation of NEET as the only test for selecting candidates for MBBS and BDS courses throughout India.
The union cabinet cleared the ordinance last Friday which aimed to partially overturn the supreme court mandate to put deemed universities, government and private colleges under the single exam called NEET. The president wanted an explanation as to why the government took the ordinance route. He also wanted to clarify certain things before signing the ordinance. For this purpose, the union health minister JP Nadda met the president in person after which the ordinance was signed.
After honourable president signed the ordinance, it has put the discussions on NEET to rest for at least one good year. After the protest by state governments on grounds that students affiliated to state boards won’t be able to get through owing to the difference in exam patterns, CBSE and state board curriculum aside from test conducted in English, the central government put forth the ordinance.
The move was aimed at partially overturning the SC order giving the state-affiliated boards a window of one year to make changes in their syllabus and education pattern. Considering the language issues and changes required in the syllabus, one year even seems too little a time for students to cope up with the immense pressure and to overcome the language barriers.
