NEET PG Might Come as an Exit Exam for MBBS Graduates

Vinod Sharma updated on : 15 Jun, 2020 23

Well, National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) doesn’t seem to stop making headlines every now and then. After Supreme Court (SC) of India’s directive, the application and implication of NEET as a single entrance test for filling MBBS and BDS seats in government and private colleges throughout India was hotly debated last month. The hullabaloo and uproar were put to rest after the government of India intervened through an ordinance and partially deferred the implementation of NEET by one good year.

NEET PG in news again

After hearing about JEE- Main as NEET for engineering, the rumour mill has started churning yet again and now, we are hearing voices about NEET PG to be set as a mandatory exit exam for MBBS graduates. If implemented, candidates have to write NEET exam and based on the performance in the test, they will be offered admission to medical courses at postgraduate level like MS, MD and MDS.

What NEET PG will be all about?

If central government is mulling and/or successfully implements NEET PG as a common exit test in future, it’ll replace different tests at the university level, similar to NEET at UG level, that MBBS students have to clear before they get admission in any field of their choice in medical sciences at postgraduate level. If NEET PG exam is implemented, it might have following functions:

  1. NEET PG will act as an exit examination for MBBS students passing out of private and government colleges throughout India.
  2. It will be a single entrance exam for admission to post graduate medical courses.
  3. Replace as a screening test for foreign medical graduates.

Is NEET PG likely as a single test?

However, NEET PG doesn’t seem to come into force anytime soon and converted into exit exam for 2020 at least. The reason being, Indian parliament has to make changes in the Indian Medical Council (IMC) Act. Particularly, to do so by December 2020 when NEET PG 2020 is scheduled to be held seems a far cry.
