It’s been long since the news about more seats (around 2000) being added to the total tally of DU admission seats this year is doing the rounds of the web. Woefully, no extra seats will be added to the overall tally of 54000 that 63 colleges under Delhi University are currently offering. Earlier, there were hopes for around 2000 more students to take admission in a diverse range of courses and find themselves in different DU colleges but that won’t be a case anymore.

Even when the Delhi University had granted permission to some of its colleges to start additional courses, permission from the University Grants Commission (UGC) was awaited. Now since the UGC has asked the colleges to start courses on a self-financing basis, Delhi University has put the decision to start additional science and humanities courses on hold.

Delhi University had approved additional courses in the science and humanities even last year but they couldn’t have been started that time since the admissions have had already begun. Now since the UGC has given permission for self-financing courses only, the university has shown unwillingness to allow such courses at any of its colleges. The reason being, students have to pay a lot more than normal fees in such colleges that are paid for the similar undergraduate courses under DU otherwise.    

Kalindi College under DU was to start new Honours courses in Geography, Chemistry, Zoology and Botany. B.Sc (Hons) in Physics was to start at Daulat Ram College, Political Science at St. Stephen’s College and BA (Hons) Geography and Sociology at Indraprastha College for Women.
