                Civil Services Main Exam  2011 MODEL TEST

                               General Studies Paper II

 

Time Allowed: Three Hours                         Maximum Marks: 300

 

Each Question is printed both in Hindi and English Medium. Answer must be written in
the medium specified in the Admission Certificate issued to you, which must be stated
clearly on the cover of the answer book in the space provided for the purpose .

Candidates should attempt all questions strictly in accordance with the instructions given
under each question. The number of marks carried by each question is indicated at the end of the question.

 

1. Write notes on any three of the following(in about 150 words each).      3×15=45

 

  1.    “India and Bangladesh – made for each other”- Comment.
  2.    What are the major issues in Indo-Pak relations? What steps have been taken by India to address the issues in the last two years?
  3.    What are the prospects of the emerging India-COMESA relations.
  4.    What are the recent significant developments in the political and economic relations between India and the European Union.

 

2. Write brief notes on any four of the following in about 50 words each:         4×5=20

 

  1. The Andean Community
  2. Harmonized System of Nomenclature
  3. Establishment of democracy in Morocco
  4. Indian efforts in combating  Somalian pirates
  5. Prahar missile

 

3. Attempt on any two of the following in about 100 words:                               2×10=20

 

  1. “‘India Show’ – exploring our potential abroad”- Elucidate.
  2. What are India’s concerns and prospects in the aftermath  of Jasmine revolution?
  3. Trace the recent developments that support India’s claim for the permanent membership in the UN Security Council .

 

 

 

4. Write on any two of the following in about 50 words each:                            2×5=10

 

  1. India’s major trading partners
  2. India-South Korea strategic dialogue
  3. Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement( DTAA)

 

5. Write on any one of the following in not more than 200 words:                     1x20=20

 

  1.       What are the concrete steps taken by India in co-operation with the world bodies  to                  address  the issue of international terrorism .
  2.       What are the grievances faced by the Indian Diaspora  in social and economic security?              What steps have been taken to ameliorate the same.

 

6. Answer any one of the following in about 200 words:                                   1x20=20

 

  1.       India has announced a strategy for doubling of exports in next three years( 2011-12
          to 2013-14).What are the highlights of the Action Plan envisaged in general and  in
          various sectors of exports in particular?
  2.       What are Non-Tariff barriers (NTBs)? Illustrate . What are its implications for developing              countries like India?                

 

7. Answer any two of the following questions (in about 150 words each):          15×2=30

 

  1. Give an account of the role of United Nations Organization as crusader against corruption.
  2. Reasons for the worsening famine crisis in Somalia.
  3. “Economic co-operation within the framework of SAFTA still remains an unfinished agenda”-Comment.

 

8. Answer any three of the following questions (in about 150 words each):        3 ×15=45

 

  1. Comment on the safety of Nuclear power plants in India.
  2. “India has a great potential in harnessing the solar energy , but the efforts are not matching with the prospects” – Give your views on this proposition.
  3. Explain the uses of Bio-technology in treatment of diseases.
  4. Give an account of India’s strides in Launch Vehicle Technology in the last one decade.

 

9. Answer  any four of the following (100 words each):                                      4 ×10=40

  1.  Functions and responsibilities of Geological Survey of India.
  2.  Evaluate India’s progress in the design and development of Surface-to-Air missiles.
  3.  Explain the ways information technology is used by India in the  betterment            of basic services.          
  4.  What are ‘Life Style Diseases’ ? What are the steps taken by the government in educating about the same.
  5.  How far Satellite technology has helped India in the education sector.

 

10. Write brief notes on any five of the following (in about 30 words each): 5 ×13=15

  1.       Bionic spectacles
  2.       EPR type reactors
  3.       MEGHA-TROPIQUES
  4.       Electronic paper
  5.       Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion(OTEC)
  6.       Nerpa

 

11. According to the Union Budget of a country the total receipts of Rs. 4,77,829 crore can be approximately broken up as follows:                                                                4

  2. Indirect Taxes                                              32%
  3. Non-Tax Revenue Receipt                              13%
  4. Non-debt Capital Receipt                                6%
  5. Borrowing and other liabilities                         24%

13. The following table shows the distribution of 100 families according to their expenditure per week. Number of families corresponding to the expenditure groups Rs. (10-20) and Rs. (30-40) are missing from the table. The median and mode for the distribution are Rs. 25.00 and Rs. 24.00 respectively. 14. The mean and variance of a set of 60 observations are 10 and 4 respectively while for a subset of 40 observations these measures are 11 and 2.25 respectively. Find the mean and variance of the other subset.                                                                         5

 


15. The following table shows annual profits (Rs. In crores) of two investment companies A and B during the given 5 years.                                                                                 8

16. (a) A box contains three red, four white and five black balls.If three balls are taken, what is the probability that these all are of the same colour?                                        3

(b) The average of 11 observations is 50. The mean of the first six observations is 49 and that of the last six observations is 52. Find the value of the sixth observation.      3
