A Telecommunications Engineer must have a B. Tech (at least) in Electrical or Electronic Engineering. Most Telecommunications Engineers specialize in a certain type of technology, such as telephone networks or broadband systems. The changing field of Telecommunications requires Telecommunications Engineers to continuously update their skills and knowledge of technologies.
Right from designing of telecom equipments, electronic switching systems, copper telephone facilities, fibre optics to their installations; fall under the essential responsibilities of a telecommunication engineer. In addition, they should be well versed with optical network systems, data network systems, next generation network systems, broadband technologies and wireless network systems. India has seen unprecedented growth in the telecom sector in last 5 years and this has only fuelled the need for more and more qualified telecom engineers.

When they start out, most Telecommunications Engineers are expected to work under the supervision of senior engineers before becoming lead engineers on their own projects. Needless to say, Telecommunication engineers must upgrade themselves from time to time to keep up with the current industry trends and advance their careers.

Skills

  • Good communication skills
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
  • Management and organisational skills, needed to plan networks

Pay Scale
In the recent years, the difference between the pay scale of an engineer in India Vs one in abroad has significantly reduced. However, India still remains a low cost competitor to her western counterparts. Indian companies have announced that they will reward employees with an average payment increase of 11% from year 2011 to year 2012, showing optimism about the future.

A survey showed that the annual average income for software engineer/developer is around 320,000 INR per year and average income for more experienced senior software developer is around 550,000 INR or more.
