A lot of thought, research and hard work go into choosing the two optionals that ensure you a safe passage through the selection procedure for the civil services exam. It is, therefore, essential that you make the right choice. While it may be said that there are various combinations that help you ace the exam, these don’t guarantee anything. Subjects like public administration, geography, history and sociology do overlap with the course content of general studies, but each subject stands on its own.
“The UPSC ensures that there is no serious overlap in the themes covered by two subjects. This is why some combinations are not allowed. The body is careful not to even let the prospect of these winning combinations emerge,” says VP Gupta of Rau’s IAS Study Circle. He also stresses that students who are looking for an easy way out are fooling themselves. Last year the topper had Urdu literature as one of the optionals, but this does not mean that any student with Urdu literature as an optional would crack the exam. “I would advise students to not look at these things in isolation. They must refrain from hasty generalisations,” says Gupta.
