The exam pattern for University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC-NET) is most likely to change from next June, according to Prof DN Reddy, a UGC member.
The exam, which is held twice a year to award junior research fellowship for PhD, is a pre-requisite for appointment of a lecturer in a college.
The UGC awards 8,800 JRF fellowships per year. Around 7 lakh students had appeared for the UGC-NET exam conducted in June this year.
During a UGC regional consultation on review of NET examination pattern organized at Osmania University by UGC’s Southern Eastern Regional Office (SERO), Prof. Reddy said that the faculty and students have highlighted two anomalies in the present NET exam pattern, reports a leading daily.
They are holding the exam in objective pattern without negative marking and testing subjects in paper-II and Paper-III out of three papers.
Ever since the negative marking pattern has been removed from UGC-NET, the number of candidates qualifying the NET examination has doubled, explained Prof. Reddy. As a result, he said, the percentage of candidates clearing the NET has increased from 5 to 10 per cent.
A similar kind of review committee consultation is being conducted by the UGC across the country where opinions regarding the examination scheme, subject, syllabus, developing question banks, evaluation process, eligibility criteria, organizational issues and research and development are being taken.
While giving his opinion on the UGC-NET pattern matter, Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) chairman Prof P Jayaprakasha Rao stated the UGC should hold two separate examinations – for awarding Lectureship and Junior Research Fellowships.
The UGC-NET exam paper should have a mix up of various types of questions like a few short answer questions and at least a couple of essay type questions along with the multiple choice questions, the APSCHE chairman further suggested.
