GGSIPU is an affiliating and teaching University that aims to facilitate and promote studies, research and extension work in emerging areas of higher education with focus on professional education in the disciplines of engineering, technology, architecture, management, medicine, pharmacy, physiotherapy, nursing, education, law, journalism and mass communication, etc. and also to achieve excellence in these and related fields and other matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.
Filling out forms of various universities can be extremely taxing after the rigorous board exams. However, Purnima Sharma is exercising extra caution while filling the application form for BTech offered by Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU). “It is quite simple. The fact that it is the only university offering reservation to Delhi students, in the engineering stream, makes it extremely important. We are anyways at a disadvantage with most universities not giving us any reservation at all. I don’t want to make any mistake in the form filling process, as it will spoil my chances by a considerable measure,” says Sharma.
But, is it worth your while to study at this university just because it offers reservation to students?
Going by the laurels its students have achieved the answer is a resounding yes.
Meet Aman Malik, a second-year student at the University School of Chemical Technology, IP University. He was among the 53 students selected from around the world, and the only Indian, to participate in the ‘Students on Ice’ educational expedition to Antarctica.
Recalling his experience, he says, “I was involved in a field course and research programme in Glaciology provided by the University of Ottawa and the University of Alberta, Canada. It felt great to be among polar historians, environmental scientists, educators, researchers, engineers and politicians from some of the leading universities and organisations in the world. I conducted measurements on various aspects of snow like temperature, variation with depth, density and type and size of crystals, among others. It was an unforgettable experience.”
About GGSIPU:
USP: Unlike Delhi University, which is a central varsity, GGSIPU is a state university and, therefore, has some perks for Delhi based students. Along with the various interesting subject combinations, the fact that it offers 85% reservation to local students makes it a truly popular choice. Over the years, the university has received various awards of repute. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council grades this university in the ‘A’ category.
Faculty: The university has around 500 faculty members.
Programmes: Last year, the university introduced some new programmes namely: MBA (financial markets), LLM (cyber crime and cyber law), LLM (intellectual and industrial property laws) and BBA (financial markets). The university has nine university schools of study, besides other affiliated colleges that offer a plethora of programmes for students across disciplines. From medicine to mass communication and engineering to dentistry, the university has it all.
IT quotient: The website is very comprehensive and gives out all admission details. Applicants can apply online and also access the brochure at the click of a mouse.
The campus will soon have a WiFi facility.
Infrastructure: The institute, which is also friendly when it comes to the physically challenged (with inbuilt ramps etc), has ultra-modern infrastructure in place complete with water harvesting and water treatment facilities and vehicular-free pedestrian paths. Students love the library: “We bunk classes to sit in the library,” laughs Divya Varun, a second-year student. “The ambience at the resource centre is really nice. A good amount of natural light and skylights along with the AC is what draws students,” she adds. The resource centre is fully computerised. As a part of its online services, the centre also offers students the flexibility of accessing resources from home. One can log in with one’s ID and access books and journals from across the world.
Studentspeak: “All my friends are doing some course or the other from the university. The campus is vibrant and life here is really exciting. The classrooms are spacious, seniors are extremely helpful and teachers are good. We don’t want anything else,” says Himadri Pal, a second-year student biotechnology student.
Clubs and societies: The annual youth festival, Anugoonj, is organised every year in February. Last year, the fest saw performances by Stereo Nation and Astitva. Different schools within the university also celebrate individual fests. SAInT (Students Association of Information Technology) organises Infoxpression; Synergy (student council of management students); and Seed, the Society for Environment Education also organises various activities round the year.
