The pattern for the Civil Services (Main) Examination, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), has been changed and approved by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

On Tuesday, 26th February, 2013, the PM approved the new format and cleared the proposal to double the weightage for General Studies (GS) papers in the Civil Service (Mains) Examination from 2013 onwards.

The UPSC, however, is yet to make an official announcement on the same, reported a leading daily.

“The decision has been made. We will be notifying the changes in a day or two," PK Misra, secretary of the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) said.

The overhaul in the exam may include replacing optional papers in the final examination with two compulsory papers with a predefined syllabus.

The changes in the examination pattern have been introduced to make the test more relevant to the current global and internal scenario.

The UPSC has three distinct levels to shortlist civil servants. The first is Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination, an objective-type exam which serves as a screening test.

Those who pass this round are entitled to take Civil Services (Main) Examination, which is a subjective-type examination.

About one-fifth those who appear for the main examination are shortlisted for the final round – Personality Test.
