Q. What is the present status of Engineering in West Bengal?

A. APAI laid the foundation of self-financed Engineering College in 1998, when it realized that the demand to study engineering was at an all-time high. Since then, West Bengal has produced 99 engineering colleges, among which 16 are Govt. while 83 are self-financed institutions. Furthermore, there has been an increase subject-wise in the field of engineering such as Bio-medical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Bio-technology etc. With self-financed institutions in the education domain now, advanced engineering subjects such as Marine Engineering is readily available, which earlier was only an expertise of govt. institutions.

Q. What’s the campus placement scenario in West Bengal engineering colleges?

A. There has been an increase in companies visiting colleges for campus placement. Besides this, we have seen an increase in the percentage of campus recruitments. Also, proper grooming and language labs in engineering colleges have groomed the students’ communication skills, which in turn has aided them in getting good placements in MNCs, software companies and core companies. We have also witnessed an increment of salary for technical graduates from West Bengal in the last few years. Furthermore, to keep up with the demands of the industry, placement cells in engineering colleges have sorted to innovation in placement related activities, leading to hike in recruitment percentage.

Q. Are the Eastern Indian students losing interest in engineering education?

A. Surely not. A clear justification of this is that recently, media reported that the top 50 students who have aced WBHSE in 2015 aspire to be a medical professional or an engineer! Unarguably, job opportunities in Engineering are on the rise with more and more investments in the IT sector; be it from the Central or Union government or from private investors. Plus, technical start-ups/ entrepreneurships booming in the Indian job market have opened doors for many in the last few years; a trend, which I believe, is here to stay.
