What is the best time to become an entrepreneur?

Campuswalkin Expert updated on : 11 Mar, 2014 0

We have all toyed with this question at some point in our life. It could have been at the starting point of our higher education or at the pinnacle of our careers or even after a decade of significant work experience.

Experts at Acharya Bangalore B-School (ABBS) talk about the right time to start thinking of becoming an entrepreneur and work towards it.

While there is no prescribed "Golden Age" when one can become an entrepreneur, however there is certainly an added advantage of starting early towards this journey and it is as early as your campus days as a student. There are various advantages associated in your pursuit for entrepreneurship during the student days and the important ones can be stated as below:

  • Ample free space for meetings and brain storming sessions: College libraries, common discussion areas, open sitting areas - all of these can be utilized free.
  • Easy to push your business plan to the investment community: As long as you have an idea which has a commercial sense, you may get away with it, even if you have not perfected the art of business presentation because of your student status and not being a pro.
  • Risk taking appetite: This is one of the biggest advantages being a student -  you are young, energetic  and can take the risk of taking plunge into an uncertain territory i.e. no  guarantee of monthly fixed salary but a long term view of making something really big and compensate all so called certainties associated with a 9 to 5 job. The moment you have tasted a fat monthly pay cheque, your ability to part with this comfort stands in the way of your entrepreneurship zeal where you need to necessarily compromise this assured inflow.
  • Networking: Being a student you will have access to the whole student community around the globe and if you managed to rope in like-minded folks. All your ideas / discussions can then be validated through this network free of cost and you may also end up getting that one USP in your proposition which will ultimately make it work.
  • Success story: As a student another important advantage is there is no need to prove your past success story as you will have none. On the contrary, as a professional, when you approach the investment community the "Success History" becomes the major obstacle to justify as to why you should be funded.

Would love to hear your views on this and whether you agree with the point of view or not. Your comments can make it a robust discussion, which will benefit students aspiring to be an entrepreneur.
