August is the month when most of the new academic years start and MMS course of Mumbai University is no exception. Dr VN Bedekar Institute of Management too started its MMS course on August 3, 2015 with a Foundation Week for the fresh MMS aspirants with the theme “Developing the Future Corporate Athletes”.

 

The Foundation Week was inaugurated by the Dr Vijay Bedekar, the Chairman of the VPM (Vidya Prasarak Mandal) Trust. With him, the Director General Dr. Guruprasad Murthy and the Director Dr Nitin Joshi were present.  

 

Dr. Vijay Bedekar talked to students about the current political scenario of our country and how important are educated people in the politics if we as a country to grow higher and touch sky. 

 

Throughout the week many guest speaker came in and delivered the sessions on various things which are part and parcel of the MMS course. The foundation week was basically the curtain raiser for the fresh MMS students about what the next two years of MMS are going to be and what are the things and competences they are supposed to inculcate.

 

The occasion was graced by many industry people, successful entrepreneurs, successful professionals and well known professors of Mumbai University.  Prof Kapil Bhopatkar, Prof. Arun Waghchoure, Dr. Cheema, Mr. Manish Velankar, Prof. Deepak Agnihotri, Ms. Vaishali Garkal, Prof. Hardeep Singh, Mr. Abhay Daukhane, Mr. Ravindra Waghmare and Mr Uday Joshi were the guests at Dr VN Bedekar Institute of Management, Thane during the Foundation Week. 

 

The objective of the foundation week was to make aware the students about the MMS course and make them feel comfortable and compatible with the course structure. This year 115 students have taken admission for MMS at Dr VN Bedekar Institute of Management.  During this week, students were exposed to many subjects like Economics, Finance, Information Technology, Statistics, Business Communication and the Goal Setting. Students also got to understand the practical application of these subjects through various activities like case studies, some team work exercises, etc. 

 

At the end of this Foundation Week I got an opportunity to interact with the new students and they were very happy with the proceedings and very eager to share their views. One of the students Usha Kore said, “I was for the first time attending a three hour long lecture, but at no point it felt heavy. The sessions were very knowledge boosting yet entertaining and interactive.” Another student Surekha Jain said, “ This first week at Dr VN BRIMS has helped me define myself in terms of my strengths and weaknesses. Also it has helped me define goals for myself.” When I asked her how this week has helped find herself and her goals, to which she said that, “It’s not frequent that we get an opportunity to interact with such well experienced people and because of this foundation week we get that golden opportunity to interact with such dignitaries and we got to learn so many things from their experience.” Whereas Minal Khadke, Maarij Karbe, Pallavi Salve, Paresh Shirke and Dhanshree Daga unanimously said that the Foundation Week has already brought in many changes in them as in positive thinking, confidence and they now know competences expected from managers by the word.

 

Finally on the August 8, the Foundation Week was concluded by Mr Uday Joshi, who is an ex BPCL Managing Director with 42 years of corporate experience. He discussed about what MBA/MMS is and the opportunities available for the MBA graduates. He explained the MBA in very simple words. He said, “MBA is nothing but a lot of reading, an ability to work in team, analytical and problem solving skills with so much of networking.”
