It refers to transformation of the genetic structure of the genes of that particular organism and that is the job of a genetic engineer. Most of the food and agricultural industry has been through genetic engineering.
Being a branch of the biotechnology, this is a streamlined field of science which has a growing scope in terms of career.
Prospects for Genetic Engineers:
Experiments and researches pertaining to the genetics are immensely useful for various other fields and industries such as, Medicine/Pharmaceuticals, Agriculture, FMCG and many more. Hence, genetic engineers’ expertise is required by other industries as well.
Courses:
• MSc. In Plant Breeding and genetics (after graduation in B.E., B. Tech or Bio-Technology)
• Certificate Course in Genetic Engineering
Institutes:
• All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi
• Banasthali Vidyapeeth, Rajasthan
• Centre for Biotechnology, Anna University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
• Centre for Biotechnology, Pondicherry University, Pondicherry
• Centre for Plant Molecular Biology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore
The students who have a bent towards science and technology and a specific interest in biology can definitely explore this as a career option. There is a lot of scope in research and higher studies in this field as well.
So, if you think that love for science and organisms, is a part of your DNA then genetic engineering can be a good career choice for you!
