You know you are management material if you’ve always wanted to be a part of the corporate world, attend high powered meetings, manage other people, earn big and climb up the corporate ladder as fast as you can! Here is how you can plan your career. Choose your course (and hence your career) right.

There are many reputed institutes that offer bachelors and masters degree in business administration in India. There are several diplomas, under graduate and post graduate programmes in management. Though courses are available at all levels, having an MBA degree is a must to reach respectable positions. Entrance tests are held to get admitted at both bachelor’s and master’s level.

To appear for the bachelor’s level courses one should have 10+2 or equivalent qualification and at the master’s level, the basic qualification is a graduation in any discipline such as BBA, B.Com, B.A, B.ScBE/B.Tech etc. Some B-schools that offer MBA or PGDM programs ask for some years of work experience as well.

There are many private and public institutes offering courses in management. They select students on the basis of a three-stage test that includes a written examination followed by a group discussion and personal interview. Some of the popular entrance exams are Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted by all Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs); Management Aptitude Test (MAT) by All India Management Aptitude Testing Service (AIMATS) New Delhi; Xavier Admission Test (XAT) by Xavier Labour Research Institute, Jamshedpur (XLRI) and ATMA (AIMS Test for Management Admission) by the Association of Indian Management Schools (AIMS).

For studying outside India, a student needs to appear for GMAT (Graduate Management Aptitude Test), which is the standard test for management institutes in USA, Europe and other countries. Along with it, TOEFL and IELTS scores are also required by some institutes. Now that you know that you have to study for an MBA, you should know the steps to reach the best B-school. Choose your B-school wisely as it will affect your career prospects the most.

An MBA or a PGDM programme will help you build analytical skills and a solid foundation in the principles of management. You will be trained in both theoretical and practical aspects. Theoretical aspects include the subjects such as economics, organisational behaviour, marketing, accounting, finance, strategy, operations management, international business, information technology management, supply chain management, project management and branding. Practical aspects would be taught through industrial training.
