IIT Patna is an autonomous institute and caters to the fields of engineering, technology, and science. It has been ranked the 10th best engineering college by the National Institutional Ranking Framework and is recognised as an Institute of Importance (INI) by the Indian government. Candidates seeking IIT Patna M.Tech Admissions can look at the information, which covers details like eligibility, application procedure, and programmes offered among others provided below.
Candidates seeking IIT Patna M.Tech Admissions must meet the eligibility criteria set by the institute. The Senate reviews the criteria periodically. Student reservations are made based on government guidelines. The programme itself is open to all category students having a bachelor’s degree in Technology/ Engineering or a master’s in Science or equivalent professional degrees and having a valid GATE score.
The minimum qualification for successful IIT Patna M.Tech Admissions is 60% marks/ first class or CPI of 6.5 for general/ OBC categories and 55% marks or CGPA of 6.0 for SC/ ST categories. Candidates who are yet to appear for qualifying degree examinations can also apply for the M. Tech programme provided they appear in all examinations and complete all degree requirements 1 week prior to the start of the autumn semester. They will also have to meet the minimum eligibility criteria, such as CGPA/CPI/marks, valid GATE score, etc.
Candidates employed in an industry or recognised institution/ organisation with a minimum of two years experience can apply for IIT Patna M.Tech Admissions if their employer sponsors them. They must meet the minimum eligibility criteria like marks/ CGPA/ CPI but do not need a valid GATE score. They also do not qualify for an assistantship.
Each M. Tech programme has different eligibility criteria and is as follows:
i) M.Tech in Nanoscience and Technology:
Candidates opting to specialise in this field must have a master’s degree in science or its equivalent in Chemistry (Pure/Applied), Nanoscience, Physics, Applied Physics/ Biophysics/ Solid State Physics/ Material Science/ Engineering Physics or have a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent in Polymer Engineering/ Materials/ Mechanical/ Engineering Physics/ Materials & Metallurgical/ Electrical Engineering/ Electronics. They should also have a valid GATE score in ME, EC CY PH, EE, XE, MT with Polymer Science and Engineering or Material Science.
ii) M.Tech in Mechatronics:
Candidates who want to specialise in this field should have a master’s degree in Electronics and Instrumentation and a valid GATE score in PH, XE, ME, PI, EC, IN, AE, EE OR a B. Tech/B.E in Aerospace/ Mechanical/ Production/ Instrumentation Engineering/ Electronics & Communication.
iii) M.Tech in Mathematics and Computing:
Candidates looking to specialise in this field need to have a master’s degree in Mathematics or a B.Tech/B.E in Civil/ IT/ Aerospace/ Computer Science/ Mechanical/ Electrical/ Electronic/ Instrumentation Engineering or its equivalent and a valid GATE score in ME, CE, AE, IN, MA, EE, EC, CS.

IIT Patna admits students for M.Tech programme under the following categories –
• Regular:
Regular candidates work full-time for their M. Tech degree and receive assistantship from the institute or other funding organisations.
• Sponsored:
Sponsored candidates are supported by an academic institution, recognised R&D organisation, industry or government organisation. They do not receive assistantship from IIT Patna.
• Part-time:
Candidates who are employed, including IIT Patna staff, and who pursue the M. Tech programme are considered part-time students. They do not receive any assistantship.
• Project staff:
Candidates under this category work on sponsored projects in IIT Patna and are admitted to the M. Tech programme to work full-time or part-time. At the time of admission, the duration of the project must be at least one year. If the project is completed before candidates complete their M. Tech programme, they will be shifted to the part-time category.
Selection for IIT Patna M.Tech Admissions is based on valid GATE score (70% weightage) and personal interview (30%). Selection of sponsored candidates is based on performance in the written test and personal interview.
The candidate must print and sign the application for IIT Patna M.Tech Admissions 2020. It should be duly filled with the required details and a scanned .jpg image with a size of not more than 500KB needs to be uploaded. The filled form and copies of certificates and other required documentation should be enclosed in an envelope and sent to the Assistant Registrar (Academic), Indian Institute of Technology, Patna, Pataliputra Colony, Patna – 800 013. Applicants should mention “Application for M. Tech Admission” on the envelope.
Applicants need to pay an application fee of INR 300 online. The fee is reduced to INR 150 for female candidates and SC/ ST candidates.
Candidates who are sponsored, part-time or are project staff need to furnish 1) a sponsorship letter for the sponsored category, 2) an NOC from the dean (R&D) of IIT Patna for project staff category, and 3) an NOC from the employer for part-time category candidates.
