After the success of National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET), the centre has decided that they will conduct one NEET like entrance test for all the streams that have entrance examinations. This formula will be known as ‘One Nation, One Exam.’
The proposed joint entrance examination for engineering colleges, which is said to be human resource development (HRD) minister Prakash Javadekar’s idea, will now be implemented from 2020. The test shall be conducted multiple times in a year and is intended to bring uniformity in academic standards and reduce the influence of donations.
The test, however, will not include admissions to IITs, which will continue to conduct their own entrance examinations. IITs will not a be part of the fluctuating standards and admission processes of the private colleges. Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) across the country will continue to accept JEE Advanced scores to admit students. Students who qualify JEE Mains can then appear for the JEE Advanced examination.
Only recently did NEET came into existence for the students who want to pursue graduation in Medical Dental or Post graduation in MS and MD from a private or government college. The Central Board of Secondary Education conducts this examination. Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javedkar, during an event at Indian Institute of Ahmedabad, claimed that ‘One Nation, One Exam’ will aim at replacing all the entrance tests for all courses including engineering management, etc with a single all-India test for each stream.
Prakash Javedkar visited every institute to discuss what all can be done to improve the education system. This discussion was with the faculties and the teachers. Based on the responses, central government came with a plan for the institutes and their betterment. The draft of the education policy was then prepared and presented to the Cabinet only after consulting the concerning authorities.
Javedkar had called a meeting of Chairman and Directors of all the IIMs in Shillong to review the functions of the management institutes. He also took a snapshot of how the faculty is chosen and how does the reservation process work. This meeting focussed on improving the quality of education.
It will be interesting to see whether the formula of ‘One Nation, One Exam’ will be as successful as NEET or fall back.
