Microsoft’s premier student technology competition, Imagine Cup, returns for its 12th year with three big competitions: Games, Innovation and World Citizenship. 

 

Imagine Cup is the world's premier student technology competition. It invites all eligible students to use their imagination and passion to create a technology solution in one of the competitions and challenges. This year, you could win a trip to compete in Seattle, Washington, U.S.A., the home of Microsoft for the coveted Imagine Cup trophy and $50,000.

 

Who is eligible?

 

If you're sixteen years or older as of September 10, 2013 and are or will be enrolled as a student at any time between January 1, 2013 and July 31, 2014, then you are probably eligible.

This year for Imagine Cup there are three primary competitions: Games, Innovation, and World Citizenship. While general information on these competitions can be found on Website.

 

World Citizenship: This category is most similar to past Imagine Cup contests which emphasized solving global problems in areas such as health, the environment, and human rights. Projects in this category are primarily judged based on the problem they’re addressing and the likely impact the project will have.

Innovation: This category is not based on global problems at all. Instead we are looking for projects with a strong consumer appeal and a gee-whiz quality that will surprise and delight a broad audience. Projects in this category are primarily judged based on the creative innovation they offer. Projects in the Innovation category that attempt to address global problems do not receive any points for doing so; those projects really belong in World Citizenship and will probably not be competitive in Innovation.

Games: Join the global game revolution. The global videogame market is now estimated at $66 billion dollars, that the number of schools with game programs or degrees has increased rapidly and that the Games competition was the most popular Imagine Cup contest last year.

 

 

What to do?

 

You and your team will have to make an original technology project from start to finish: come up with a great idea, make a plan, build your project, and submit it to Imagine Cup. It can be either purely software or a combination of software and hardware. It needs to use Windows, Windows Phone, or Windows Azure.
