Design Yatra, a nationwide initiative by Institute of Indian Interior Designers (IIID), touring 29 cities of India, covering 15,000 kms in four Nano cars, visited Pune from 2nd January 2020 to 12th January 2020. The convoy of designers and architects visited India’s one of the largest design institute, MIT Institute of Design with an aim to spread awareness and take design to the masses.
Acknowledging the motto of ‘My City, My Promise’ by IIID’s Design Yatra, MITID exhibited furniture with innovative design, which were designed by the student and faculty. Some of the furniture’s that were designed on the specific brief with unique features were highly praised including ‘The Mazeejh Bench’ made up of a woven seating surface, where the traditional craft of cotton rope is weaved with modern aesthetics providing an integrated storage space and the ‘Tokri’ which is created in a form of basket to maintain the feel and comfort of a basket for buyers to rest.
Addressing the IIID’s Committee Members, Prof. Amit Deshmukh - Head of Interior and Furniture Design Department said, “We have been associated with Indian Railways as well and working on the projects with them to improve the space and overall passenger services. MITID is in the process of adopting Loni Railway Station and students have proposed design solutions to the railway authorities. These solutions include improving the seating and waiting areas for passenger, structuring the vendor kiosks, signage and way finding & providing solutions to ease out railway porter’s work.”
Adding to the initiative by MITID, the Director of MITID and & H.O.D. of Product Design, Prof. Dhimant Panchal stated, “The exhibited furniture and railway projects by MITID shows our commitment towards 'My City, My Promise'. Being a prominent design institute, it becomes our responsibility to provide design solutions to the problems. And we highly praise and support the initiative of IIID.”
Praising the student work and hand-on approach followed at ISFD MITID, the Committee Chairman Mr. Vishnu Bheda said, “Everything starts with you. Understanding the importance of design, we want students to create innovative idea and work for the better infrastructure for people.” He added, “If you have to take design to masses, you have to make masses sensitive.”
Films of Kirloskar Vasundhara International Film Festival were screened at the Institute discussing on the allied activities related to the environment, wildlife, energy, air, and water. The yatra came to an end with a question-answered session, where the query related to the problems of the environment and ways to solve it were discussed and suggested by the students and faculties.
MIT Institute of Design (MITID) is a premier centre for Design education, practice and research in India and is part of the Maharashtra Academy of Engineering Education and Research (MAEER). MAEER was established as a society and trust with the sole aim of creating and developing professional education facilities to train the aspiring young generation.
MITID started its operation in 2006 and has now grown to be one of the largest multi-disciplinary design campuses in India. The institute is located on the famous Rajbaug farms spread over a vast area of 125 acres on the beautiful banks of the Mula-Mutha River at Loni-Kalbhor, Pune. MITID offers Design programs at Undergraduate (4 years) and Post-Graduate (2 years) level with 1000+ students pursuing programs in Industrial, Communication & Fashion Design disciplines.
