By the year 2020, the number of students at the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is expected to go up to one lakh.  

A proposal to admit less than 30,000 additional non-resident students in these institutes was discussed in a meeting of the IIT council on August 23, according to sources. Now that the HRD Ministry has approved the proposal, the overall strength will increase to one lakh by the year 2020.

At present, around 82,604 students study at IITs’ undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate courses, which are residential. The authority of these institutes has assured that there will not be any adverse effect on studies in the institutes due to shortage of faculty. The IITs are taking faculty-enhancing measures. According to sources, IITs will also not compromise on the teaching process despite the intake of additional 30,000 students.

However, it is being considered that students who will not require hostel accommodation should be admitted to these institutes.

As per the proposal, the number of students is going to increase by 10,000 every year in order to bring the total to one lakh by 2020.

The intake of more non-residential students means there is not going to be any requirement of creating hostel accommodation for around 30,000 additional students.

Extra Efforts

The IITs have been taking measures to attract quality faculty that includes year-round open advertisements, invitation through search-cum-selection process to alumni/scientists/faculty, appointment of NRIs and PIOs and advertisements in international journals for regular faculty.

The government has launched the Global Initiative for Academic Networks (GIAN) to enable foreign faculty to teach some courses in higher educational institutions. IITs will also take steps like outstanding young faculty awards to encourage youngsters to come up. The Mobility of faculty from one central educational institute to another and pay parity have also been kept under consideration to attract the best faculty in IITs.
