Professional Courses in India

We have known people who have acquired their Ph. D’s & double Ph. D’s from across universities. It was a revered thing back then, you know. I’m talking 60’s through the 80’s. People were held in great esteem, sometimes being conferred honorary titles! Educated people are regarded highly even today. But education system per say, has changed. With changing times, we need to adopt and as more and more people recognised this, it paved way for newer, more specific courses and careers.

So your typical Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Zoology honours degrees at the UG & PG level is giving way to more specific, targeted field of study. And why not, the cut-throat economy of today demands specialists, experts in their own fields with full technical & domain knowledge. Every company is looking at cost-saving methods, so they want somebody with full knowledge, who can be their one source contact to resolve all problems. Nobody wants to invest in multiple people to do the same job. It’s true!

Besides, the immense talent scarcity industry faces today requires out-of-the-box thinking, decoding issues related to employability skills access, affordability and accreditation – a kind of Blue Ocean Strategy to look at the demographic dividend from a whole new perspective.

So here we have compiled a few professional courses that have a huge demand in the industry right now and seem to have a very bright future ahead. Being a specialist in any of these can be an advantage for you: you could of course specialise in any of the branches of your choice in these fields based on your attributes.

Engineering:

It covers a whole range of disciplines-anything from rockets to mobile phones and even hip replacements! Engineering is not just about ‘fixing things’, it’s about understanding why and how things work.  As an engineer, you will be involved in all aspects of designing, building and testing new technologies and products. Creativity and problem solving are at the heart of every engineering industry.

Besides this, you should consider Engineering for the money, prestige, flexibility & choice, intellectual development, challenge and creativity that it offers!

Architecture:

The art & science of designing buildings and other physical structures is Architecture. It is not only about the exterior and interior of a building, it’s about creating an environment as a whole. Architects are inventors, merging passion into profession. You need to be a hand-on person and work on the real life problems of building something functional, which at the same time needs to be arty and environment friendly. To be successful in this career, you should love projects, have lots of opinions & preferences, should have a passion – for people, space, environment and be inspired throughout!

The pay is of course, very rewarding. But more than that you need not be an expert at Maths! These days, there are various specialisations - Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Building Information Modelling, Community Design, Urban Planning and Design, Economic & international Development, Environmental and Land Use Planning, GIS and Spatial Analysis, Historic Preservation.

Polytechnic:

Traditionally, Polytechnic is an institution that offers education in many arts and sciences at the diploma level. Since most of them offer education to improve the practical and technical skills of students, they have a clear vocational orientation. In India, polytechnics are set up and run by the State governments or are private institutions with varying degrees of government aid, offering diploma and certificate courses that can be done after Class 10.

There is a huge demand for IT services and computer technicians is on the rise, with the growth of the IT and digital industry. This may be one of the best times to invest in a polytechnic education, if you are not inclined towards a full-fledged Engineering degree. Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS) & Apprenticeship Training Scheme (ATS) are some of the courses offered by the government to promote polytechnic studies.
