Scholarships for Engineering Students - An engineering course is one of the most sought-after courses in India. While it may make a student self-reliant in financial terms after he/she lands up with a high-paying job on course completion, the cost of pursuing the course itself is unaffordable for many students. With increasing course fees in various engineering colleges, it is becoming challenging to join the desired engineering courses for financially weak students. In such a situation, scholarships for engineering students may come as a boon.

Types of Scholarships Available for Engineering Students

For an engineering student in India, it is hopeful news that there are several types of scholarships available to support higher education. While the Government of India is supporting students to pursue professional courses, many private bodies, NGOs, corporate firms, and government sector organisations also grant scholarships for engineering students. Following are some of the well-known scholarships for students who aspire to become professional engineers:

• Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship for College and University Students: This is a scholarship provided by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India. The scheme aims at offering financial support to meritorious students from poor families, so they can meet their education expenses. Around 82,000 scholarships per year are distributed among boys and girls equally from all states and all study streams and boards. The scholarships are given to pursue graduate/postgraduate studies in professional fields and include scholarships for engineering students. Students above the 80^th percentile and with family income less than Rs. 6 LPA can get these scholarships.

• Special Scholarship Scheme for Jammu & Kashmir: The scheme grants 5,000 scholarships per annum to encourage J&K students for higher studies like engineering courses that are held outside the state. There are 250 of these scholarships available for engineering aspirants. Students passing 12^th standard from J&K state board or CBSE schools in the state as well as with family income less than 6 LPA are eligible for this scholarship.

• NTPC Scholarship Scheme: The Maharatna Company, NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation), awards its scholarships to SC/ST and physically challenged students of engineering. These scholarships for engineering students are available for pursuing full-time degree courses in any of the disciplines out of mechanical, electronics, electrical, instrumentation, and computer science.

• Indian Oil Corporation Scholarships: While these scholarships by IOC are given for several full-time programmes, even engineering students are eligible to get it. Students who can confirm their admission in the first year of an engineering course are eligible. They should also meet the criterion of having their family income below Rs. 1 lakh. There are 100 scholarships available in total.

• J N Tata Endowment Loan Scholarships: These scholarships for engineering students are only awarded to bright students who pursue their courses abroad. These are also granted to students in other streams of higher education. There are norms laid down to decide the scholarship amount for each student.

• VIT University IGNITE Scholarships: While several universities in India offer scholarships for engineering students, VIT awards scholarships to around 200 top scholars across India. These scholarships are awarded to students who wish to pursue an engineering course at VIT University, but who cannot afford to do so.

• University Grants Commission Junior Research Fellowship: Students holding a Master’s degree in engineering/technology and having a minimum of 55% marks from a recognised university are eligible to apply for UGC JRFs. If they are able to get a fellowship, then they can pursue PhD research in engineering/technology with financial benefits.

• North South Foundation Scholarship: High-performance students with their family income less than Rs. 65,000 can apply for this scholarship. It is given to students who want to pursue professional courses, including engineering. North South Foundation Scholarship can be awarded for the full course, subject to a student’s performance.

• ONGC Scholarships: Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC) offers scholarships for engineering students and students from other professional courses. Out of 500 scholarships, engineering students are eligible for 247 scholarships. These scholarships are awarded to students from SC/ST category and with family income less than Rs. 4.5 LPA.

• FAEA BHEL Scholarship: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) offers its scholarships for students who are from socially and economically weaker backgrounds. The range of scholarship also covers engineering students.

Other Scholarship Schemes Available for Engineering Students

While we have covered the available scholarships from all types of organisations and bodies, this is not a comprehensive list. You can also go for many other available scholarships for engineering students. Following are a few more opportunities you can grab:

• MOMA Scholarship: This is also known as the Merit Cum Means Scholarship for Engineering Students, which is offered by the Ministry of Minority Affairs, Government of India. As the name suggests, the scholarship is available for students from a national minority community like Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Muslims, Parsis, Jains, and Zoroastrians. Every year, more than 2,000 scholarships are awarded to engineering students with family income less than Rs. 2.5 lakhs. Students receive Rs. 10,000/year and course fee.

• LIC Golden Jubilee Scholarship: LIC offers this scholarship to students doing graduation, including engineering students. Students are eligible when their family income does not exceed Rs. 1 lakh. The chosen candidates get Rs. 10,000 annually.

• Siemens Scholarship: This scholarship is given to first-year students of engineering from IITs and NITs. Their family income should not exceed Rs. 2 lakhs.

• OP Jindal Engineering and Management Scholarship: OP Jindal Group companies have been providing this scholarship to engineering and management students. Around 100 scholarships are given to students from both domains. Shortlisted students have to take a qualifying test, and selected students receive Rs. 80,000 as scholarship.

Apart from these institutions and companies, several other organisations offer scholarships for engineering students. Students can also take up some internship programmes during their engineering courses to receive the stipend.
