As biotechnology is a specialised field, entry into this field mostly happens at the postgraduate level. But a few institutions have started undergraduate courses as well. Only students with science background can take entry in this field; they must have studied biology, chemistry, physics or agriculture subjects at their 10+2 level and undergraduate level to pursue postgraduate programmes. Biotechnologists with an engineering background always have an edge over others in the industry. For admission into the undergraduate programmes, science subjects at 10+2 level are asked for.
Programmes and Specialisations
Programmes in India, in biotechnology include - BSc. in Biotechnology, BTech in Biotechnology, Five year MTech in Biotechnology, MSc. courses in Biotechnology, M.Tech.in Biomedical Engineering / Biotechnology, Ph. D in Biotechnology.
Specialised programmes could be M.Sc. (Agriculture) Biotechnology, M.V.Sc. (Animal) Biotechnology, M.Tech. Biotechnology, M.Sc. / M.V.Sc.in Veterinary Biotechnology, and M.Sc. (Marine) Biotechnology. Other areas of specialisation are Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Horticulture, Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Parmacology, Physiology, Tissue culture, Dairy Technology, Fisheries, Medicine, Life Sciences and Genetics, Neuroscience, Medical Nanotechnology.
