Professional occupations, such as general physicians/surgeons, dentists, registered nurses, and physical therapists, usually require at least a bachelor's degree in a specialised field. The basic or degree level qualification for a medical profession is MBBS, which is of five and a half duration including one year internship.
Some of the common areas of specialisation in medicine and surgery are general practice, paediatrics, neurology, gynaecology, dermatology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat), anaesthesiology, psychiatry and pathology etc. These areas demand further super specialised studies of three to five years after MBBS.
A pathologist should have a degree or DMLT (diploma in medical laboratory technology), while medical representatives need any one of the pharmaceutical qualifications - diploma, bachelor’s or master’s in Pharmacy. Besides, one can opt for other paramedical diploma or degree course in subjects like X-Ray technology and radiology, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, opthalmic technology, orthotic engineering and audiology and speech therapy. Also one can take up dental mechanic certificate (DMC) course, diploma in operation theater technology (DOTT) course and diploma in cardio vascular technician (DCVT) Course.
