Tremendous Opportunities Available in Healthcare Sector in India

Nidhi Bahl updated on : 18 Feb, 2020 0

Sedentary lifestyle along with fast food habits have marred physical activities of many individuals in India, resulting in cardiac problems and diabetes. Lifestyle diseases pose a major health problem in India, and would grow from 55% today to 80% by 2020. Maharashtra alone has more than 55 lakh diabetes patients and have 1.5 crore hypertension population. In Mumbai more than 90% diabetic patients with uncontrolled diabetes, feel their blood sugar is in control. For better and effective management of global standard, Maharashtra requires 6 crore doctor consultation for diabetes and 18 crore doctor consultation for hypertension per year. This would grow more than 50% by 2030 according to a leading healthcare management & research institute, IIHMR Bangalore.

The health care sector’s revenues in India are projected to shoot up to US$ 170 billion in 2020 to US$ 280 billion in 2020. IIHMR Bangalore, forecasts that, Maharashtra will witness a spurt in the demand for hospital management professionals. Health care is one the major sector of spending in the Indian economy and is also the country’s principal contributor for employment generation.

Dr. Biranchi N. Jena, Director of IIHMR Bangalore, said, “We see tremendous growth in the Healthcare sector in India which has progressed at an impressive pace over the past five years. The Indian private health care industry is expected to grow from around US$ 40 billion currently to US$ 280 billion by 2020. Hospital has highest proportional contribution (71%) of total healthcare revenues in India, followed by pharmaceutical (13%), medical equipments and supplies (9%), medical insurance (4%) and diagnostics (3%). However, overall, there is a huge shortage, running into a few lakhs, of health care staff across all levels in all states of India in the public and private space. The Indian healthcare sector is facing shortages in terms of workforce and infrastructure. The country is also facing pressure due to the poor reach of quality healthcare to crores of its citizens due to problems like access and affordability. There are around 1.65 trained allopathic doctors and nurses per 1000 population, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended guideline of 2.5 per 1000 population. Total hospital bed density in the country at about 0.9 per 1000 population is well below the global average of 3.0 and the WHO guideline of 3.56.”

Dr. Jena also said, “Total healthcare expenditure in India was only 3.9% of GDP, compared to 8.9% for Brazil, 6.2% for Russia and 5.2% for China. Out of this amount, out-of-pocket expenditure accounts for 61% of spend and only 26 per cent of Indians are covered by health insurance. By 2020, an estimated 97 million Indians will be aged 60 or older, up from about 64 million in 2010. The number of diabetes cases is expected to increase from nearly 65 million in 2013 to 100 million by 2030. Thus, hospitals need a greater management thrust to ensure that our young and productive nation doesn’t get affected by mismanagement of health care.”

There are an estimated 700 private hospitals in Maharashtra, barring small and medium clinics. There is a current requirement of around 1700 hospital management professionals in the state, but due to non-availability of qualified professionals, they find it difficult to manage. This scarcity of quality health care professionals will increase further in a big way in coming years as existing hospitals modernise and expand and many more new ones of global standards are set up.  We at IIHMR foresee that Maharashtra will need around 12,000 hospital management professionals by 2020 to meet this growing gap.

Current management of such diseases such as hypertension and diabetes in Maharashtra results in only 6% desired outcome – that is maintaining blood sugar and blood pressure within the desired level and without any complication. Thus, there is a growing need to bring “ Effective Health Management” in all aspects of health care.
