Hafeez Contractor, renowned architect of international repute and praised by New York Times as “The man who draws India” was scathing in his comments that Indian students of architecture should use creativity and innovation if they want to compete with their international counterparts.   

The occasion was inauguration of “UDAAN” festival 2015 organized by Aditya College of Architecture & Aditya College of Design Studies. As part of the festival the award ceremony of International Design Ceremony was hosted. The competition conceived and promoted by Aditya College of Architecture is organized to reach out to the wider context of Asia for cultural understanding and to share common concerns. The objective of the competition is to foster ideation, creativity, innovation, dialogue and sharing among student communities belonging to nations of ARCASIA.

This year the competition received around 100 entries from nine different countries expressing their ideas about “sacred spaces” in the form of architectural and land scape design proposal. The top two positions were awarded to “Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, China” the third prize was won by “Sri Venkateshwara Institute of Architecture, India”. Additionally citations were awarded to K.R.I.V.I.A Mumbai, B.U.E.T Bangladesh, N.U.C.E Vietnam, C.A.R.E Tiruchirapalli and S.V.I.A Hyderabad.

The awards were presented to the winning students at the inaugural function of “UDAAN” festival, an annual event of Aditya College of Architecture and Aditya College of Design Studies by Architect Hafeez Contractor, Architect Shirish Beri and Shri. Harishchandraji Mishra, Trustee Aditya Group of Institutions. The four days intra-college festival, inaugurated on 19^th December will continue till 22^nd December 2015. The models and sketches of the winning teams will be displayed during the festival at Aditya Educational Campus, Borivali.

The ideation and creativity displayed by the students of foreign universities was in stark contrast to the work displayed by the Indian students. Mr. Contractor’s comment was a wake-up call to everybody present that if students want to make their mark in the field of architecture, then they have to work hard to create better plans.
