Varre Aditya Vardhan of Narayana Srichaitanya Junior College, Vishakhapatnam stood first in this year’s VIT Engineering Entrance Examination beating 1,84,4832 candidates who appeared for the entrance exam held between April 9 and 20, 2014 in 112 cities across the country.
Releasing the results on Thursday, VIT founder-chancellor Dr G. Viswanathan said that of the 1,93,851 registered candidates, 1,84,483 (Boys-148184; Girls-36299) appeared for the exam. Students from Andhra Pradesh, Jharkand, Mumbai, Shimla and Ahmedabad bagged the first 10 ranks.
Mayank Sharan from Jharkhand secured the second rank, followed by Hyderabad student Gangam Rohith Reddy, also from Narayana Srichaitanya Junior College.
“Our admission is merit based on the marks secured by the candidates in the entrance examination which we conduct,” Dr Viswanathan said.
The results have been published on the university website www.vit.ac.in.
“The counseling for those with ranks up to 8000 will be held on May 19 at Vellore and Chennai Campuses, followed by those with ranks up to 12,000 on the 20th. Ranks up to 16000 will sit for counseling on May 21; and those with ranks up to 20,000 will sit on May 22, 2014.”
Of the 11,307 who appeared for examination from Tamil Nadu, 728 have qualified for counselling. Interestingly 18 candidates of the 155 who appeared for VITEEE from Dubai have been called for counselling, which would start on May 19 and go upto May 22.
S Jaikrishna of Suguna Pip School in Coimbatore who secured 12th overall rank stood first among Tamil Nadu students. Sharan R of Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Chennai secured the 29th rank.
Last year too, a student from Vishakapatnam topped the list followed by aspirants from Delhi and Hyderabad who bagged the second and third ranks.
There are also special scholarship provisions for students. The Chancellor said that Central and State board toppers will be awarded a 100 per cent fee waiver for all four years. “VITEEE ranks holders between 1 and 50 will be given 75 per cent fee waiver, while those in the bracket of 51 to 100 will be given 50 per cent and between 101 and 1,000 will be given a 25 per cent tuition fee waiver,” he said.
The Chancellor also added that plus two toppers among students (one boy and one girl) from government schools in rural areas in each district of Tamil Nadu will appearing for VITEEE and secure top marks will be given 100 per cent tuition fee waiver and full exemption from hostel and mess fee under the unique STAR (Supporting the Advancement of Rural Students) programme. “This effort has been made to ensure that high scorers from each district who have poor economic background get their due and are given the best of education,” said the Chancellor.
