What are the skills that someone who wants to make movies requires?
As a director s/he must have a deep sense of observation of this world and people around. And be skilled in the art of storytelling using technology in cinema.

What kind of training do aspiring filmmakers need?
They must learn the basics, elementary rules of the game and must go through two-to-three years understanding the art and technique of telling a story. They must join a school or institute for a minimum of two years no matter how talented they are. Education shows you the right path to grow in right direction and also saves years of struggle in the industry. That’s why I felt the need to set up a film, television, animation and media arts institute like Whistling Woods International.

Does it take a different kind of expertise and mindset to make a children’s movie (as compared to a movie for adults?)
You have to have depth and be an intelligent director to make children’s films. You have to do a deep study of child psychlogy and behaviour playing in the story and also keep in mind the children in the audience watching it. You have to do lot of special kids’ workshops with experts like they did for Taare Zameen Par.

How does one direct a movie?
The camera and mike are the tools in the hand of a director, like a pen is for a thinker or a brush is for a painter. First, they must know what they are going to paint. Then you need skill, passion, understanding of existence and the world.

Your favourite children’s movie? What made it special? If you were to make a children’s movie, what would it be all about?
So many: ET, Mary Poppins, Harry Potter (series)... You become like a child while watching these movies and an adult while judging them. Ha ha ha. I will make one someday and show it to you to judge it.
