An accessory designer is responsible for developing and creating designs for hand bags, belts, jewellery, hats, scarves and other fashion materials, which is used to probably compliment clothing apparels. Accessory design includes several streams such as product design, fashion design, jewellery design, etc. There is a growing demand for accessory designs and that makes it a very attractive field for young aspirants. As an accessory designer, a person uses his/her artistic skills and design software to develop and create the required accessories and may also be involved in the marketing and production departments. A person my work independently or with a corporation. This field is competitive and demanding. Also, there is also a growth rate in the fashion industry, which provides more job opportunities for people associated with the said career.
Creativity plays the most important role where design is concerned. Saying that, accessory designers should start with research, they should should be able to assess trends in demand and should be able to predict future trends. Using the information on current trends, they should decide on the fabrics, shape, design and colours.
Price, affordability and manufacturing are also key factors to keep in mind. A design, when developed should be unique so that it is looked at, noticed and bought. Designers should have a keen eye for details and have good presentation and conceptualisation skills. They need to be observant and open minded. Also, they should understand the customers and their needs well.
Last but not the least, this profession does not have any boundaries like other professions so if you’re a kind of person who is ready to learn and re-learn with every new project, there is no better profession than this. Since there are hundreds of brands fighting for shelf space, an accessory designer has to keep evolving. The need for accessory designers is only going to grow because the size of India’s retail sector is already estimated at around US $450 billion.
Candidates should have a Bachelor's Degree in Fashion Designing, Fashion Merchantising or Accessory Designing from a recognised univeristy.
Some Institutes conduct Entrance Exams while some take direct entry.
