The Border Security Force is India’s border patrol agency, under administrative control of the Union ministry of home affairs. Part of the country’s paramilitary forces, the BSF was born in 1965. Its primary role is to guard the international borders in peace time. The BSF also prevents transnational crimes, smuggling and other illegal activities and gives a sense of security to residents of frontier areas. In war time, it needs to hold ground in less threatened sectors, protect vital installations, assist in controlling refugees and discharge anti-infiltration duties in specified areas. It boasts being the world’s largest border guarding force. It sends personnel on UN missions too.
Don’t join the Border Security Force if Arnold or Sylvester Stallone fancies you. The job entails more serious responsibilities than what you see in movies or tele-shows. As a BSF officer you have to be alert 24x7 and have to check of an insurgency by terrorists or forces from other side. As an officer you may also have to get involved in combat during the war times.
In order to join the BSF you are required to complete your graduation and after completion of your course you can join BSF as an assistant commandant (AC). An NCC ‘B’ or ‘C’ certificate or outstanding achievements in sports will be added qualifications. You will have to go through the UPSC selection process and fulfill all the eligibility criteria in order to see yourself in an officer’s dress.
