Engineering Management is concerned with the application of engineering principles to the business world. Engineering Managers are therefore trained and specialized in technological aspects as well as the administrative and planning aspects of the business. In other words, it is the optimization of the work systems.

 

The field is diversified, so there are plenty of options to chose from. For example, one could go for the product management, manufacturing, production supervisor and even consultancy. In spite of all the options and scope for growth, it is strongly recommended that students who have a passion for analytical thinking and can solve complex problems using technical skills should undertake this profession.

 

The major areas of focus are as follows:

1. Operations Research: It means constructing mathematical models for complex problems and ultimately improve the decision making process.

2. Systems Engineering: It means understanding the mechanics, dynamics and construction of the system.

3. Supply and Quality chain management: This means managing the process of production along with the quality to deliver a quality product.

 

The major sectors of work have been automobile, IT, manufacturing and mechanical and some of best recruiting organizations are Nokia, Siemens, Onida, Samsung, Philips, LG, Mahindra and Mahindra etc.

What do they do?

  • Supervise and lead engineers, plan and develop projects and oversee production and quality control.
  • Direct and coordinate production, operations and maintenance in industrial plants.
  • Hire, train, and mentor other engineers and supporting staff.
  • Plan project specifications and set timelines to achieve the goals.
  • Prepare budget, pitches and proposals.
  • Negotiate on contracts.

How do I get there?

A Bachelor's degree in engineering is required post which the candidate is required to have a Masters in Management. Though some experience as an engineer is preferred before one moves on to become an Engineering Manager.

Since a contract and the project undertaken have specific targets to be achieved, the engineer manager has to finish his tasks as well as manage the team in his supervision as well. He is accountable for quite a number of things for which attention and detailing is required at all times.
