Indian postal services come under the Central Group ‘A’ services. IPoS officers are recruited through the civil service examination, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. They are posted in the postal department. Like other civil servants, they are eligible to move on deputation to other ministries and departments of the central government, state government or even on foreign assignment to United Nations bodies. “In terms of technology induction, India Post is miles ahead of its competitors in the private sector,” says Aman Sharma, director, Delhi postal circle.

Don’t think that in the time of internet the importance of post offices have gone down. In fact, post offices are still hold lot of relevance in the Indian administration. If you end up becoming an IPoS officer then you will have to perform various duties with responsibility. As an IPoS officer you will be responsible for operational management, human resource and personnel management, financial management, material management, investigation and vigilance. Not only that, as a IPoS officer you will also be involved in Business development, technological up gradation of the operative systems, marketing postal products and also other non postal products sold out through the postal outlets like life insurance schemes and various other financial services.

How do I get there?

Indian postal services officers are recruited through the civil service examination conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) which requires a bachelor’s degree. 

Typical day in the life of a IPOS Officer

The normal working hours in administrative offices are from 9am to 5.30pm, five days in a week. However, a government servant like Indian postal services officer works 24x7, as per the call of duty. In addition to the administrative work at the office, there are field visits for inspections and supervision of the post office functions.
