The Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, established in 1988 offers a two-year Post-graduate course leading to Master of Communication and Journalism (MCJ) degree and Ph.D Programmes. The department was first to get UGC – Special Assistance Programme (SAP) grant in the university and it has completed UGC – SAP DRS, II phase . This has resulted in enhancing the infrastructure facilities like establishing a TV Studio, Computer Lab and conducting annual SAP funded seminars. Further, UGC has sanctioned Rs. 50.00 lakhs grant under SAP DRS III Phase. The department had the rare distinction of establishing an international collaboration (MOU) for conducting the Academic Exchange Programme with Department of TV and Media Studies, Volda University College, Volda, Norway. That was the first of its kind in the field of journalism / education in India. It continued for nearly eight years. Both faculty and students from both the countries produced collaborative TV programmes. The department offers practical training to the students to bring out ‘Campus Courier’, a daily Broadsheet and ‘Madhyama Mangala’, a practice journal and a video magazine ‘MCJ Round-Up’ on a regular basis. The department has organised a number of Regional, National Seminars and Workshops. This includes on Mass Media and Intellectual Property Rights (2005) and Workshop on TV Production.
