The Department of Organic chemistry was started in the year 1950 by the University of Madras as one of the science departments to focus on research in the area of organic chemistry. The mission of the department is to impart education in the field of chemical sciences essential for the downtrodden people and economically backward society, to provide education with financial assistance in the form of scholarships and fellowships to all students and also through earn while you learn schemes.
