Chest Surgery Unit of CSM Medical University was established under the guidance of Prof A Charan who was also the first Head of Department. Prof A. Charan pioneered and institutionalized the regular practice of Thoracic & Vascular Surgery. He adorned the chair of the president of the Association of Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery of India. The unit was elevated to full fledged department in 1998.
