The Faculty of Social Sciences was founded in 1976 and is one of the largest faculties of the University. The Departments of this Faculty organise Workshops, Seminars and Conferences in their respective priority areas. The Faculty members are also involved in different research projects offered by different funding agencies both National and International.
Besides courses offered by different departments, the faculty also manages Bachelor Programme and a course in Library and Information Science (B.Lib & Info Sc). The departments of the faculty are:
1. Department of Economics: A well-recognised and one of the oldest ones in the University, the Department of Economics offers courses that are of bachelors, masters and doctoral levels.
2. Department of Political Science: The Department of Political Science was established in 1977. Other than offering one undergraduate course, three postgraduate courses and one PhD course, the department hosts seminars, panel discussions, workshops, extension lectures and study tours for its students. It has a vibrant students association and a well-stocked library. The department has recruited men and women of distinction in various spheres of specialisation in political science. Research is the backbone of the department and it has more than 60 students and faculty members enrolled in research projects.
3. Department of Psychology: Including the most sought after courses at JMI, this department attracts students from all over the country and abroad. Students are offered theory, science, and practice, resulting in graduates who have the knowledge, skills, and values to be effective agents of change in the society. They are placed in different hospitals and organisations during summer vacations to get the real understanding of their role as psychologists. Besides field and lab training, students also undertake a project/dissertation on contemporary issues in organisations, social, clinical, health, and counselling.
4. Department of Sociology: The Department of Sociology is committed to teaching its students at the undergraduate and graduate levels the basic grammar of social science within the context of a general awareness of diverse national and international social realities and issues, building a foundation of intellectual skills for independent research useful for varied professions, including extracurricular learning, using mother tongue and acquire bilingual reading and writing habits and encouraging teaching faculty to research and enrich their knowledge and practice. Courses offered are of undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels.
5. Department of Social Work: The Department of Social Work established in 1967 and is well known for its teaching and instructional programme as well as innovative field action projects. Members of the faculty also serve on various committees for the formulation, monitoring and implementation of development initiatives, both in the government and the NGO sector. The Department has an excellent infrastructure in terms of smart classrooms, conference room, a library, a computer and data processing lab and an advanced behavioural and personality enrichment laboratory. The department hosts various programmes which have some unique components to develop fully rounded professionals. Some of the most appreciable ones include a compulsory Rural Camp of 10 days, skill laboratory training for micro skill development, a self-development and management programme for the development of managerial skills and group conferences to enhance the presentation skills of students. Research and field action projects have been the backbone of the department.
6. Department of Commerce & Business Studies: This department regularly organises co-curricular events that enhance one’s personality. The syllabus is regularly updated as per changes in demands and expectations of the market. Students participate in activities like survey-based field work, industry interactions, extensive projects and presentations. Courses offered by the department are of bachelors, masters and doctoral levels.
7. Department of Adult and Continuing Education and Extension: Besides awareness generating programs, this department has been organising skill and knowledge based courses for unemployed/ underemployed and out of school youth. It regularly organises a number of courses, street plays, puppet shows etc. in the slums, urbanised villages and communities around JMI for women, adolescent girls and youth.
