National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) was incepted in the year 1 January 1966 for impating advanced and practical-based learning in the field of Oceanography. The headquarters of the NOI institute is placed at Dona Paula, Goa, and regional centers at Kochi, Mumbai and Visakhapatnam, is one of the 38 constituent laboratories of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi. Institute provides adequate knowledge pertaining to sea and shallow coastal oceans. National Institute of Oceanography is self finace institute and approved by UGC. The institute offers Doctor of Philosophy course in Doctoral Studies, Summer Internships, Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research.OCEANOGRAPHY is a conglomeration of biology, chemistry, geology and physics subjects, and provides practical as well as scientific knowledge about oceans and environment. Institute has a huge group of efficient scientist and a well organised technical support team, which provides full assistance to researchers in their researches. Apart from this institute has a state of the art ocean research infrastructure, which makes learning and research favourable for the OCEANOGRAPHERS.
NIO library has trendy classrooms which are fully air conditioned and packed with modern facilities like black boards, OHP, LCD, podium, tables and chairs. The classrooms facilities make academics’ conducive for students.
Institute imparts world class laboratories for the students and researchers. The laboratories of the institute assist learner in their researches and provides innovative and practical based learning. The laboratories of the institute are fully fit out with advanced equipments. The institute also runs a coastal research vessel CRV Sagar Sukti, a 23 m vessel equipped for multidisciplinary oceanographic observations. NIO's scientists also have access to the ocean going research vessel ORV
NIO library is bank of knowledge, fully fit out with 15,000 books and 20,000 back volumes of research journals, making it the best collection of printed literature on ocean sciences in the country.
